Log sets are a cheaper solution that use a stack of ceramic logs powered by a gas burner and set into an existing firebox.
For my recommendations, I focused on options for a built-in or freestanding fireplace. These gas fireplaces are exactly what they sound like—a fireplace built into a wall or corner of the room that may or may not use the footprint or flue of an existing fireplace.
Vented or Ventless
Operationally, there are differences between a vented and ventless gas fireplace, but these distinctions are not visible.
A typical vented gas fireplace can be fueled by either natural gas or propane (some models run dual fuel) with two vents that run to the outside of your home. This type of gas fireplace uses outside air for combustion.
The safest gas fireplaces in terms of indoor emissions are those that provide direct venting to the outside. If you decide to put one of these, it is not typically a DIY job—it requires installation to hook up the gas lines handled by a licensed professional.
Conversely, vent-free fireplaces use air from your room and then deliver as much heat as possible directly back into your room. These are usually easier to install than a traditional fireplace since there is no ventilation to be run through the roof or walls of your home.
Many modern gas fireplaces are ventless and have an electronic ignition, so there’s no pilot light to get up and running. They also feature a backup battery so they’ll work during power outages.
Before purchasing a gas fireplace, check your local building codes, as there may be restrictions. In certain states like California and Massachusetts, the sale of vent-free gas appliances including fireplaces is prohibited.
Fuel Type
Gas fireplaces use natural gas or propane, and a good portion of models use both. Natural gas fireplaces produce more heat than those that run on propane (a moot point if there's no gas line hookup). Keep in mind that with propane models, the tanks will need to be refilled periodically.
Heat Efficiency
Heat is measured in BTUs, and the larger the space, the more BTU output you'll need. The number of BTUs is relative to the fireplace's size. For example, a 44-inch-wide gas fireplace might give off 30,000 BTUs or more, whereas a 32- or 28-inch gas fireplace may only produce between 15,000 and 20,000 BTUs.
To provide an adequate primary heating source for your home, experts recommend an output of 20 BTUs per square foot. You can use a BTU calculator adjusted for your climate zone to get an idea of how many BTUs would be ideal for your situation. Keep in mind that some gas fireplaces also come equipped with blowers that can help maximize BTU output.
Safety
Ventless gas fireplaces are required to have a built-in pilot oxygen depletion sensor to automatically shut down if carbon monoxide is detected or if oxygen falls to unsafe levels in the room.
This is different from automatic shutoff, which switches off power if controls remain untouched for a set length of time. If indoor air quality is a health concern for your family, stick with a gas fireplace that supports direct venting.
If you live in a home with young children or pets, consider a safety screen for fireplaces with glass fronts, which can become hot to the touch.
