I love it, because all you need to do is prepare the dough, fill the cookie press (spritz) and press out the cookies.

How to makeCream Cheese Spritz Cookies:

  • Preheat oven to 350F.
  • In a bowl, cream together butter and cream cheese.
  • Add sugar, beat to incorporate. Add egg yolk and beat until light and fluffy.
  • Next add vanilla and beat to combine.

In a separate bowl combine flour and salt. Add flour gradually to the butter mixture and beat until incorporated

  • Place the dough (you’ll need to work in batches) in the cookie press with the desired disk.

  • Press dough out onto clean, ungreased cookie sheet. (Do not cover the baking sheet with parchment, wax paper or aluminum foil)!

  • Sprinkle cookies with holiday sprinkles (optional).

  • Bake for 13-15 minutes, until golden brown on the edges, rotating the sheets once halfway through (be careful not to burn them!).Remove from the oven and let cookies cool for 5-7 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack or a platter.

  • You can also color the dough (using gel food coloring preferably), if you’d like to make colorful cookies, like green Christmas trees.

So the most important question that may arise is – Do you really need a cookie press to make spritz cookies?

And the answer is no.

Many people, also experienced home and professional bakers will tell you to just fill a piping bag and use a tip like “star” to pipe out the cookies.

I’ve tried it and it works.

But using a pastry bag has its cons, too!

Why use a cookie press instead of pastry bag for spritz cookies?

  • The shapes you can create with a pastry bag and tip are limited.
  • It requires more effort, than just using the cookie press.
  • And honestly, I prefer the press.
  • I do enough work throughout the day with my hands and any shortcut is welcome.
  • The cookies are the same size and shape when using a cookie press.
  • If you decide to use a piping bag, your dough needs to be the perfect consistency. Too thick will make the piping more difficult.

What cookie press to use for cream cheese spritz cookies?

There are many brands on the marker and almost all of them look like my grandmother’s old cookie press.

But hers is made out of metal and a lot sturdier.

The one I have os the OXO brand.

I have three sets of disks, but the ones that come with the press and pretty good.

This is what I sued today.

There also is a Nordic Ware and Wilton cookie presses, that look almost similar.

Hope you get to try thisEasy Cream Cheese Spritz Cookies Recipe.

FAQs

Should you use parchment paper when baking spritz cookies? ›

Do not use parchment paper or a Silpat mat. The dough will not stick when pressed. Light colored baking sheets produce lighter colored cookie. Dark pans promote browning.

Why won't my spritz cookies come out of the press? ›

If the dough is sticking to the bottom of the press instead of adhering to the pan, it might be too soft. Place it in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 minutes and try again. Butter is highly recommended when making Spritz cookie dough.

Why did my spritz cookies spread in the oven? ›

Excess Sugar and Fat

Measuring is key in baking. If your cookie contains excess sugar or fat, it will spread while baking. If your first batch of cookies spreads, try adding a few tablespoons of flour to help thicken the remaining dough.

Why are my spritz cookies tough? ›

Simply adding the flour to the stand mixer and beating it in runs the risk of overdeveloping gluten and giving you a tough or dense cookie (not what you want after all that work with the creaming). Instead, the best method is to add the flour and mix it in by hand, stopping as soon as no dry flour remains.

How to keep spritz cookies from spreading? ›

Helpful Hints and Tips for Perfect Spritz Cookies:

Make sure you're using an ungreased non-stick cookie sheet. Greasing your pan will cause your cookies to spread. This dough is best used the day it's prepared. Do not chill the dough before using.

Why did my Spritz cookies go flat? ›

Mistake 3: There's too much sugar or not enough flour

If you're heavy-handed when measuring, that extra sugar means extra liquid and more spread when baking in the oven. Using too little flour could lead to flat cookies, too.

Should spritz cookie dough be sticky? ›

*Perfect spritz dough has a soft malleable texture that is not too sticky or stiff. Creamed butter and sugar is the foundation of great spritz cookies.

Why do my spritz cookies taste like flour? ›

Improper flour measurement is the #1 cause of your cookie dough being too dry or the cookies tasting like flour.

When making spritz cookies do you decorate before or after baking? ›

You can decorate the cookies after baking by brushing with corn syrup or icing then adding sprinkles, nonpareils, etc. Use an unlined and ungreased cookie sheet/tray or the cookies won't stick to the tray as you are pressing them out.

What do I do if my Spritz cookie dough is too dry? ›

Very slowly, teaspoon by teaspoon, add a liquid that you've already included to your dough. Mix after each teaspoon—you don't want to over-saturate it and risk gooey dough. Don't overmix, because this might lead to the problem you're trying to fix!

How long are homemade spritz cookies good for? ›

Storage: Baked spritz cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Freezing: Freeze fully baked and cooled spritz cookies in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

How do you flatten cookies without sticking them? ›

Place your dough on the bottom sheet of parchment. For recipes that yield more than a dozen cookies, you'll likely have to work in batches of two or more. Cover the dough with the second sheet of parchment. Rock your rolling pin back and forth over the parchment to flatten the dough.

Is it better to bake cookies with or without parchment paper? ›

Using parchment paper for baking cookies will enable them to bake more evenly, and the non-stick quality will also help prevent them from cracking or breaking when lifting them off the sheet.

Why are my Spritz cookies going flat? ›

Mistake 3: There's too much sugar or not enough flour

If you're heavy-handed when measuring, that extra sugar means extra liquid and more spread when baking in the oven. Using too little flour could lead to flat cookies, too. Learning how to measure ingredients is key to good baking.
