Kitchen Design Trends 2024 - 8 Design Elements To Look Out For (2024)

A new year and a new kitchen design trends list! Welcome to my kitchen design trends 2024.

Before I dive into the kitchen design trends for 2024, remember, trends are just that – trends. They come and go, and it’s totally okay if you’re drawn to some and not to others.

As I always say, the most important thing is to do what you love and what suits your lifestyle.

After all, it’s YOUR kitchen

But that doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of fun exploring new trends for inspiration.

So, with that in mind, let’s explore what 2024 has in store for kitchen design!

📺 If you prefer video content, watch mine below:

1. curves & organic shapes

Let’s talk about curves, a classic element in kitchen design that’s making a comeback.

Curves aren’t a novel idea; like many trends, they often make a resurgence. I remember incorporating lots of curves in my designs a decade ago, and now, they’re trending once again.

But it’s not just about curved cabinets, which are definitely gaining popularity, I’m noticing curves making their way into other aspects of the kitchen too.

Think curved countertops, archways for doorways or windows, and even open shelving. These organic shapes bring a softer, more natural feel to the space.

This trend gives a subtle nod to biophilic design, a concept I’ve explored in the past.

It’s all about blending the natural environment with our interior spaces, creating a stronger connection with nature right in our kitchens.

2. Window Backsplash

A trend I’ve been noticing a lot in Australian kitchen and interior design lately is the window backsplash.

Another concept somewhat tied to biophilic design as it brings a bit of nature and the outdoors right into your home.

The idea here is to flood your kitchen with natural light and create a visual connection with the outside world.

But I’m not just talking about a standard window behind the sink. This is about installing a full-length, backsplash-sized window that runs along the majority of your countertop.

Sometimes it’s paired with wall cabinets above, or left completely open for a light, airy, and minimalistic vibe.

This design move isn’t for everyone. It’s particularly suited to full renovations or, more commonly, new builds.

It’s essential to consider how this window will integrate with your home’s external appearance and whether you have a scenic view to complement it.

Safety is another key consideration for this type of design, but personally, I’m a big fan of the window backsplash.

Anything that brings more natural light into the kitchen is a definite plus in my book! 👍

3. Natural Stone

Natural stone. ❤️

A timeless material that’s been gaining more and more popularity in recent years and I believe this trend is set to continue in 2024.

We’re seeing natural stone being used not just for countertops and backsplashes, but also for sinks and even in some unique door projects.

There’s a certain depth and charm in natural stone that, in my opinion, engineered stones just can’t match. It’s this unique beauty and character that seems to be drawing more people towards it.

Part of this shift could also be due to concerns about some engineered stones. As people look for alternatives, natural stone is emerging as a preferred option. Only time will tell how this plays out.

One natural stone that I predict will gain significant attention in 2024 is quartzite, specifically Taj Mahal quartzite.

I’m particularly fond of this stone. It has a beautiful, soft veining, warm yet neutral colour, making it highly versatile. It pairs exceptionally well with warm earth tones and wooden cabinetry, and I’ve noticed its increasing use in recent designs.

4. Wood Tones & Earthy Colours

This isn’t exactly a new trend. Reflecting back, I was working with wood-finish cabinet doors and oak doors a decade ago.

However, what’s interesting is how these wood finishes have evolved. Nowadays, I’m seeing a shift towards more minimalistic designs.

Think simple slab doors or plain shaker styles, a departure from the heavy, cathedral-arched, and ornate doors of the past. Yet, the essence of wood finishes remains.

Alongside this, there’s a noticeable trend towards earthy tones.

I’m talking about soft off-whites, beiges, warm putties, terracottas, and, of course, green. Green isn’t fading away, though we might see a move towards softer, more desaturated shades this year.

They’re about using natural materials and a nature-inspired colour palette to forge a connection with the outdoors.

It’s more than just a trend; it’s about bringing the tranquillity and beauty of nature into our kitchens.

Are you noticing the theme here? It’s all about creating spaces that feel natural, calming, and connected to the world outside our windows.

5. No upper cabinets

A trend that really took off last year and shows no signs of slowing down in 2024. The no upper cabinet, or no wall cabinet, look.

This trend involves opting out of traditional upper cabinets in favour of alternatives like open shelving, a ‘countertop ledge’, or sometimes, not having anything at all.

It’s a bold move and certainly not for everyone. When you go for this look, you’re giving up a significant amount of potential storage space.

However, if you’ve figured out other storage solutions – like plenty of drawers, large pantry cabinets, or even a separate utility or pantry room – then ditching upper cabinets can really open up your kitchen.

It allows more light to flow through and creates a feeling of spaciousness and openness that’s quite appealing.

It’s about balancing aesthetics with functionality, creating a kitchen that feels open and airy while still meeting all your storage needs.

6. Hidden kitchens

The essence of a hidden kitchen lies in integrating appliances and using smart design elements to keep them out of sight.

I’m seeing more kitchens with panel-ready appliances that blend seamlessly with the cabinetry, and larder cabinets often equipped with pocket doors to conceal larger appliances like ovens or everyday items like kettles, toasters, and coffee machines.

I anticipate that venting hobs, or cooktops with built-in extractors, will become more popular.

They eliminate the need for bulky overhead cooker hoods, helping to maintain a clean, uncluttered look.

Additionally, the trend of integrating invisible induction cooktops into countertops is on the rise. Brands like Iviscook and TPB have been pioneers, and now with Gaggenau entering the market, I expect to see more of these in 2024.

The hidden kitchen concept is all about embracing a minimalist aesthetic.

It’s particularly effective in open-plan spaces where you want the kitchen to blend smoothly with the rest of the living area.

The goal is to downplay the overtly utilitarian aspects of a kitchen, like large American-style fridge freezers or prominent cooker hoods.

It’s about creating a kitchen that complements your home’s design, making it feel less like a separate workspace and more like an integral part of your living area.

If you’re drawn to clean lines and uncluttered spaces, this might be the perfect approach for your kitchen.

7. Textured Elements

Textured elements in kitchen design, a trend that really caught my eye last year and one I’m certain will maintain its momentum in 2024.

I’m talking about incorporating textures through features like fluted, slatted, or reeded doors and panels, as well as creating interesting visual effects around cooker hoods.

Adding texture to a kitchen isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about bringing a tactile dimension to the space, making it more engaging and dynamic.

I think the trend of infusing texture into kitchen design will not only continue but become a more prominent design consideration this year.

8. Organic Modern kitchen design

Wrapping up my look at kitchen design trends for 2024, let’s talk about a broader design style that’s catching on, Organic Modern.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen trends like minimalist, Scandinavian, Mid-Century Modern, Japandi, warm minimalist, and biophilic designs.

In my view, Organic Modern is an evolution of these concepts. It’s a style that blends the best of both worlds: the natural and the contemporary.

As a quick overview: Organic Modern design harmoniously combines natural elements and modern functionality.

This style uses a palette of warm, earthy tones to create spaces that are both current and welcoming, with a strong emphasis on sustainability alongside aesthetics.

While Organic Modern isn’t exactly new, it’s been simmering under the surface for a while and I believe 2024 is the year it really steps into the spotlight.
